HW3: you may ignore the part about Chomsky normal form

If you've already done it, or choose to do it anyway, I'll give you a tiny bit of extra credit. I thought we'd be a bit further alon by now when I wrote that homework a few weeks ago. (You should still make a semi-valiant effort on the first part of the CFG question).

  1. Should 'time' also be a noun in the lexicon? I don't think there are any possible parsings given the grammar otherwise.

  2. Yes, I agree with Puuj. There seems to be something off with the lexicon. thoughts?

  3. I agree with these guys. Can we just add it ourselves? Or is this a trick question that we are supposed to follow blindly?

  4. It also seems like we should have a grammar rule "VP -> Verb PP", to accommodate something like, "fly like an eagle." Right? Can we add this?

  6. Quite certain there's a parse even given the posted rules.

  7. @All: Yes, the grammar does contain a "bug" in the sense that it's not what I intended (stupid noisy channel!) but Levon is also right that you should be able to get at least one parse. So if you want to "guess" what I wanted and parse (eg., add "VP -> Verb" and "Noun -> time") then that's fine... if you want to just leave it as is, that's fine too. (Sorry, didn't check this one for bugs enough before posting :P.)
